Coach Education Programme Returns with New Training Opportunities

14 September 2026

The council’s popular Coach Education Programme is back to help local sports clubs and coaches build their knowledge and skills ahead of the new season.

The programme offers practical training to help coaches create safe, welcoming and inclusive environments for everyone involved in sport.

The new timetable runs from October to March, with courses delivered across several locations and online. Courses include First Aid in Sport and Safeguarding.

There are three new additions this year: Defibrillator and CPR Training, Sports Coaching and Neurodiversity and Leading Wellbeing, a practical mental health session.

Launching the programme, Chair of the Communities and Wellbeing Committee, Councillor Sharon Lowry, said: “It is great to welcome back our Coach Education Programme for another year. Sports clubs play an important role in keeping people active, connected and involved in their communities.

Coaches and volunteers are at the heart of these clubs. This programme gives them the skills and knowledge to support members and help clubs thrive.

I am particularly pleased to see three new courses added this year. Leading Wellbeing will help coaches promote positive mental health through sport. Defibrillator and CPR Training will give participants the confidence to act in the event of a suspected cardiac arrest. Sports Coaching and Neurodiversity will help coaches adapt their approach to support neurodivergent participants.

Sport brings many benefits, but it can also come with challenges. These courses will give coaches practical skills to better support their members and create positive, inclusive sporting environments.”

Councillor Lowry added: “There is a calendar of courses to explore on the council website. I would encourage clubs to sign up to a course today and make a great start to the 2026/2027 season.”
