CHILDREN GET SET FOR A SUMMER OF ACTIVITIES ACROSS LISBURN & CASTLEREAGH

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council is offering children and young people the opportunity to get active this summer and enjoy a range of fun packed activities as part of the popular, ‘Summer in the City’ programme. Bookings will open on Monday 7 June at 11am, giving parents plenty of time to make plans before the start of the school holidays!

This year, the programme is filled with an amazing choice of sports courses and summer activity schemes to keep children occupied throughout July and August, which is particularly important for their physical and mental health after such a difficult 12 months.

Children aged 5 – 14 years, can enrol on the Council’s summer scheme programme with a fun blend of coached activities, games, arts and crafts, bouncy castles and much more. Schemes will be delivered at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex, Lough Moss Leisure Centre, Glenmore Activity Centre, Grove Activity Centre and Kilmakee Activity Centre.

There are also sports specific schemes and courses such as Golf, Basketball, Gaelic Football, Goal Keeping and even a Gardening Club to help children try a new activity. There is also a Disability Kids Club and access to Disability Hub Inclusive Cycles at Lough Moss Leisure Centre in Carryduff.

Launching the summer programme, Alderman Michael Henderson MBE said, “Our ‘Summer in the City’ programme provides the perfect platform to encourage children across the council area to get active this summer.

“Returning to physical activity is a vital step in enhancing people’s health and wellbeing, particularly children and young people whose lives have been most impacted by the pandemic. Children have spent significant time this year, taking part in virtual classes and home schooling which has isolated them from their normal routine and peers.

“The council is delighted to provide an extensive summer programme to help children get involved and enjoy some fun with other young people during the school holidays. It is also a great opportunity for children to step out of their comfort zone and try a new sport or activity, which is a fantastic life skill and it could potentially start an interest in a cool new hobby.”

The enrolment date for the ‘Summer in the City’ programme commences from Monday 7 June at 11am. For full details on the range of activities and to enrol online, please visit https://www.theleisureplex.com/activities/summer-in-the-city
